Kennedy Debates
A debates series at the John-F.-Kennedy institute at the Free University of Berlin organized by students. „Only by bringing in the discourse principle can one show that each person is owed a right to the greatest possible measure of equal liberties that are mutually compatible.” (Jürgen Habermas) Public debates on current issues: a student initiative to create a platform of dialogue between the public, students and academia. Combining a culture of public debate with a cross-disciplinary learning philosophy, the “Kennedy Debates” project aims to broaden the scope of what a lecture can do: journalists, politicians, academics international and domestic take sides on different theses on contemporary political development, blending the spheres of academic discourse and public concern. A fixed debate format invites guests to present their ideas with rhetorical efficiency: limited speaking times and active audience involvement create an environment of accentuated dialogue – an arena of respectful competition. By experimenting with new rules to the game of academic interaction, “Kennedy Debates” wishes to add to a spirit of perpetual discourse at the Freie Universität Berlin.
